What is text summarization and what does this Text Summarizer do?
A summary condenses a longer source into its central information. Extractive summaries select original sentences, while abstractive summaries express the main content in new wording. This tool keeps those methods visibly separate and provides Brief, Standard and Detailed length choices.
How to use Text Summarizer
Enter up to 2,000 words and optionally name a focus or topic.
Choose Extractive Summary, Key Points or AI Abstractive Summary.
Select Brief, Standard or Detailed and run the tool explicitly.
Edit the summary and compare real length, reduction and preservation information.
Key features
- Deterministic extractive sentence selection
- Local key-point formatting
- Optional focus terms
- Three meaningful length choices
- Optional validated AI abstractive output
- Editable result and summary-specific report
Input guide
Use a passage with enough complete sentences to condense. The optional focus influences selection but does not prove relevance. Short input may reasonably produce a summary close to the original. Keep source attribution when the summarized ideas are not your own.
How to understand your results
Local extractive output consists only of selected source sentences. Reduction is calculated from actual word counts. AI abstractive output can introduce wording not found verbatim in the source and therefore receives a preservation review. Every summary can omit context, qualifications or minority viewpoints.
Worked example
A three-paragraph project update describes the goal, reports a 12% increase, and lists two next steps.
Extractive mode selects original sentences; Key Points turns selected sentences into bullets. An AI abstractive summary may rephrase them, but a changed 12% triggers a warning.
Common use cases
- Create a quick overview before close reading
- Extract key points from meeting notes
- Condense background for a project brief
- Compare a source with an editable short version

Text Summarizer FAQs
Clear guidance for choosing and using the catalogue responsibly.
What does the Text Summarizer do?
It condenses a passage through local sentence selection, local key points or optional AI-assisted new wording.
What is an extractive summary?
It is a shorter selection made entirely from original source sentences.
What is an AI-assisted abstractive summary?
It is a newly worded summary produced after an explicit AI request and checked for protected-element changes.
What is the Key Points mode?
It formats locally selected source sentences as bullets for scanning.
How does Brief differ from Standard or Detailed?
The choices select progressively more source content; the actual output depends on the number of sentences available.
Can a summary omit important context?
Yes. Always check qualifications, exceptions and supporting evidence in the source.
Are names and numbers always preserved?
Extractive mode retains selected sentences exactly, but omitted sentences may contain facts; AI mode can change details and therefore needs review.
Can I edit the generated summary?
Yes. The output remains editable and current metrics recalculate.
Which modes run entirely in my browser?
Extractive Summary and Key Points run locally.
How is summarizing different from paraphrasing?
Summarizing reduces content to central points; paraphrasing restates roughly the same content in new wording.
